What Are Logical Fallacies?

Affirming the Consequent

This fallacy has the form: If P then Q. Q is true. Therefore, P is true. This is invalid because Q can be true for reasons other than P. The consequent (Q) being true doesn't prove the antecedent (P) must be true.

Example: If it is raining, the ground is wet. The ground is wet. Therefore, it is raining. (The ground could be wet from a sprinkler, not rain.)

Denying the Antecedent

This fallacy has the form: If P then Q. P is false. Therefore, Q is false. This is invalid because Q might still be true for other reasons. The implication only tells us what happens when P is true, not when P is false.

Example: If it is raining, the ground is wet. It is not raining. Therefore, the ground is not wet. (The ground could still be wet from other sources.)

Affirming a Disjunct

This fallacy occurs in disjunctive arguments: P or Q. P is true. Therefore, Q is false. This is only valid for exclusive OR. In inclusive OR (the standard logical interpretation), both P and Q can be true simultaneously.

Example: You can have tea or coffee. You're having tea. Therefore, you can't have coffee. (Unless explicitly stated as exclusive, both options could be available.)

Fallacy of Four Terms

A valid syllogism has exactly three terms, each used twice. This fallacy occurs when a middle term is used with different meanings, effectively creating four terms. This equivocation breaks the logical connection between premises.

Example: All banks are financial institutions. The river has steep banks. Therefore, the river has steep financial institutions. (The word 'bank' has two different meanings.)

Undistributed Middle

In a categorical syllogism, the middle term (appearing in both premises but not the conclusion) must be distributed (refer to all members of a class) in at least one premise. If it's undistributed in both premises, the syllogism is invalid because there's no guaranteed overlap between the subject and predicate of the conclusion.

Example: All cats are animals. All dogs are animals. Therefore, all cats are dogs. (Both premises only tell us about some animals, not all animals, so we can't draw this conclusion.)

Informal Fallacies: Relevance

Fallacies of relevance introduce information that is logically irrelevant to the argument's conclusion. These fallacies distract from the actual issue by appealing to emotions, attacking character, or introducing unrelated topics. While psychologically persuasive, they fail to provide logical support for the conclusion.

Ad Hominem (Against the Person)

This fallacy attacks the person making an argument rather than addressing the argument itself. There are several variants: abusive (insulting the person), circumstantial (suggesting bias from circumstances), and tu quoque (accusing hypocrisy). The validity of an argument is independent of who presents it.

Example: You can't trust John's argument about climate change—he's not even a scientist. (Whether John is a scientist doesn't determine whether his argument is sound; we need to evaluate the argument's evidence and logic.)

Straw Man

This fallacy misrepresents an opponent's position to make it easier to attack. By distorting, exaggerating, or oversimplifying the actual argument, the arguer creates a 'straw man'—a weaker version that's easier to knock down—rather than addressing the real position.

Example: Senator Jones says we should reduce military spending. Clearly, she wants to leave our nation defenseless against foreign threats. (The senator's position has been exaggerated into an extreme that's easier to criticize.)

Red Herring

A red herring introduces an irrelevant topic to divert attention from the original issue. The arguer shifts focus to something that may be interesting or emotionally charged but doesn't address the actual point of contention. This tactic is often used to avoid addressing difficult questions.

Example: We shouldn't worry about pollution from power plants when there are so many unemployed people who need jobs. (Unemployment, while important, is irrelevant to the question of pollution's environmental impact.)

Appeal to Authority (Argumentum ad Verecundiam)

This fallacy inappropriately invokes authority to support a claim. While expert testimony can provide legitimate support, this fallacy occurs when the authority lacks relevant expertise, the field lacks consensus, the authority is quoted out of context, or the topic requires reasoning rather than testimony. Not all appeals to authority are fallacious—only inappropriate ones.

Example: This diet must be effective—my favorite actor uses it. (An actor's endorsement doesn't constitute expertise in nutrition or evidence of effectiveness.)

Appeal to Emotion (Argumentum ad Passiones)

This fallacy manipulates emotions (fear, pity, pride, hatred) instead of using valid reasoning. Specific variants include appeal to fear (argumentum ad metum), appeal to pity (argumentum ad misericordiam), and appeal to flattery. While emotions are part of human experience, they shouldn't replace logical evaluation.

Example: If you don't support this law, imagine how you'd feel if it were your child who was hurt. (The emotional appeal doesn't address whether the law is effective or justifiable.)

Appeal to Ignorance (Argumentum ad Ignorantiam)

This fallacy argues that a claim is true because it hasn't been proven false (or vice versa). Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. This fallacy shifts the burden of proof inappropriately, demanding that opponents disprove a claim rather than the claimant providing positive evidence.

Tu Quoque (You Too)

This fallacy dismisses an argument by pointing out that the arguer's behavior is inconsistent with their position. Example: You say I should quit smoking, but you smoke too, so your argument is wrong. (The health risks of smoking remain valid regardless of whether the arguer smokes.)

Genetic Fallacy

This fallacy judges something as true or false based on its origin rather than its current merit or evidence. The source of an idea doesn't determine its truth value. Arguments should be evaluated on their own merits, regardless of where they came from.

Example: That theory came from a discredited researcher, so it must be false. (Even if the researcher is discredited, the theory should be evaluated on its own evidence and logic.)

Informal Fallacies: Presumption

Fallacies of presumption contain assumptions that are dubious or unwarranted. These fallacies take for granted claims that require proof, oversimplify complex issues, or beg the question by assuming what they're trying to prove. They fail because they don't establish the foundation needed for their conclusions.

Begging the Question (Petitio Principii)

This fallacy occurs when an argument's conclusion is assumed in one of its premises, creating circular reasoning. The argument goes in a circle, using the conclusion to support itself rather than providing independent justification. This is often disguised by using different wording for the premise and conclusion.

Example: The Bible is the word of God because God says so in the Bible. (This assumes the Bible is authoritative to prove the Bible is authoritative.)

False Dilemma (False Dichotomy)

This fallacy presents only two options when more alternatives exist, forcing a choice between extremes. Also called black-and-white thinking, this fallacy oversimplifies complex situations by ignoring middle ground, gradual options, or multiple factors. Reality often includes nuance that binary choices exclude.

Example: You're either with us or against us. (This ignores neutral positions, partial agreement, or alternative perspectives.)

Slippery Slope

This fallacy argues that a first step will inevitably lead to a chain of events resulting in an undesirable outcome, without providing adequate justification for the inevitability of this chain. Not all slippery slope arguments are fallacious—only those lacking evidence that each step will actually lead to the next.

Example: If we allow students to redo one assignment, soon they'll want to redo every assignment, then they'll demand we eliminate all deadlines, and eventually the entire grading system will collapse. (This chain reaction is asserted without evidence.)

Hasty Generalization

This fallacy draws a general conclusion from insufficient, unrepresentative, or biased evidence. Sample size matters in statistical reasoning, as do sampling methods. A conclusion about a population requires adequate data that represents that population's diversity.

Example: I met two rude people from that city, so everyone from that city must be rude. (Two people don't constitute a representative sample of an entire city's population.)

Composition Fallacy

This fallacy assumes that what is true of the parts must be true of the whole. While sometimes valid (collective properties), this reasoning fails for properties that don't scale up. A composition fallacy occurs when properties of individual elements are incorrectly attributed to the system they comprise.

Example: Every player on the team is excellent, so the team must be excellent. (Individual skill doesn't guarantee team coordination and strategy.)

Division Fallacy

This is the reverse of composition: assuming what is true of the whole must be true of its parts. While some properties distribute downward, many don't. This fallacy occurs when collective properties are incorrectly attributed to individual members.

Example: The company is profitable, so every department must be profitable. (Some departments might operate at a loss while others generate surplus.)

Complex Question (Loaded Question)

This fallacy embeds an unwarranted assumption within a question, making any direct answer appear to accept that assumption. The classic example is 'Have you stopped beating your wife?'—both yes and no imply you once did. Complex questions should be broken down to address their hidden assumptions first.

Example: When did you stop cheating on your taxes? (This presumes you were cheating, which may not be true.)

Suppressed Evidence (Cherry Picking)

This fallacy selectively presents only favorable evidence while ignoring or concealing contrary evidence. A fair argument acknowledges all relevant evidence, including data that might weaken the conclusion. Cherry picking creates a misleading picture by omitting context.

Example: This treatment works—five patients improved. (This ignores the 95 patients who didn't improve, creating a false impression of effectiveness.)

Informal Fallacies: Ambiguity

Fallacies of ambiguity exploit unclear or shifting meanings of words, phrases, or grammatical structure. These fallacies equivocate between different senses of terms or rely on vague language to obscure invalid reasoning. Precision in language is essential to avoid these fallacies.

Equivocation

This fallacy uses a word or phrase with multiple meanings inconsistently within an argument. By shifting between meanings, the argument appears valid but actually commits the fallacy of four terms (in syllogisms) or otherwise breaks logical connections. Clear definitions prevent equivocation.

Example: The sign said 'fine for parking here,' so it must be fine for me to park here. (The word 'fine' shifts from meaning 'penalty' to meaning 'acceptable.')

Amphiboly

This fallacy arises from ambiguous grammatical structure rather than ambiguous words. Poor sentence construction can make meaning unclear, allowing different interpretations that lead to different conclusions. Proper syntax eliminates amphiboly.

Example: The professor said on Monday he would give a lecture. (Does this mean the professor spoke on Monday about a future lecture, or that the lecture will occur on Monday?)

Accent Fallacy

This fallacy changes the meaning of a statement by emphasizing different words or using selective quotation. By stressing particular words, taking statements out of context, or quoting selectively, the arguer misrepresents the original meaning to support their position.

Example: The review said the film was 'good' if you're 'desperate' for entertainment. (Emphasizing different parts changes whether this is a recommendation.)

No True Scotsman

This fallacy protects a universal claim from counterexamples by arbitrarily redefining terms or adding qualifications. When faced with evidence against a sweeping generalization, the arguer moves the goalposts by claiming the counterexample doesn't count, thus making the claim unfalsifiable and meaningless.

Example: No Scotsman puts sugar on porridge. 'But my Scottish uncle does.' Well, no true Scotsman puts sugar on porridge. (The definition is modified to exclude counterexamples.)

Causal Fallacies

Causal fallacies involve errors in reasoning about cause and effect. Establishing causation requires more than correlation; it requires evidence that one event genuinely produces another. These fallacies mistakenly infer causal relationships from temporal sequence, correlation, or oversimplified analysis.

Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc

This Latin phrase means 'after this, therefore because of this.' This fallacy assumes that because one event preceded another, it must have caused it. Single Cause Fallacy

This fallacy assumes a complex event has only one cause when multiple factors contributed. Real-world phenomena usually result from multiple interacting causes. Oversimplifying causation to a single factor ignores the complexity of causal relationships and can lead to ineffective solutions.

Example: The recession was caused by housing market collapse. (While significant, recessions typically involve multiple economic factors: banking practices, monetary policy, consumer confidence, global trade, etc.)

Causal Oversimplification
